Update 7/17/24: Since we published on July 15, we've seen different BTU levels for each air conditioner with different discounts. The Keystone window air conditioner and the Whirlpool portable air conditioner originally listed for 12,000 BTU models were no longer on sale. The 10,000 BTU units from each brand, however, still are.

It's ideal to buy a reliable air conditioner before you're desperate for one, but life happens. How do I choose an AC unit?
Whether you buy a window-mounted air conditioner or a portable model depends on how much space you have. Generally, the higher the BTU, the more square footage the unit will cool. Another consideration is the climate: If humidity is an issue for your home, look for an AC that doubles as a dehumidifier. Likewise, if you live in a hot and dry climate, an evaporative cooling AC will add much-needed moisture to the air in your home. Most, but not all, air conditioners come with installation kits, so keep that in mind when shopping.
